How Are We Doing?
Leading ES Indicators Show Progress
"Five months ago some things around here were broken. So we addressed the basics. We put processes in place to get the job done right and regained out customer focus. We did a lot of foundational work, and we're making the right angle turn toward a great future."
I was recruited by Nortel to lead the executive/ internal communications team for Enterprise Solutions, a business led by new President Bill Conner. The acquisition had been struggling to compete effectively against Cisco and Lucent/ Avaya.
This 1st "Leading Indicators" message to employees resonated with CEO John Roth, who wrote to Conner: "This is what troops need to hear -- real direction and leadership without BS, but an optimistic we can and will do this tone!!"

"These are clearly exciting times to be in the telecom industry. I've recently returned from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona where the conversations among the 50,000 attendees were wide-ranging and spirited: everything from Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) and how bandwidth-hungry applications such as much and video are driving demand for 4G/ LTE ... to the Sprint-Clearwire-Intel group's revived WiMAX plans ... to the new Evolved EDGE for GSM networks ... to speculation on industry consolidation ... to Microsoft's bold bid for Yahoo and Google's interest in a piece of the wireless spectrum."

A Sense of Urgency, A Sense of Confidence
"We need to standardize our product offers. Product management needs to focus on how we can make it easier for our sales people to sell the product in as few configurations as possible and make it easier to deply. We owe the account teams a very locked-down, focused Plan of Record that can be overlaid onto the account plan so the sales people feel confident that we are going to nail the committed dates. This will drive improved margins."

Greater China region continues world-leading wireless growth
From the 3GSM World Congress, Cannes
"Among the more than 1.4 billion wireless subscribers worldwide, roughly one-fifth of these are in Greater China. Our GSM customer China Mobile has the most subscribers of any wireless global operator -- more than 160 million -- and another customer, China, Unicom, using CDMA access, is third with over 100 million users. In Taiwan, Chungwa Telecom is the largest GSM wireless service provider, and uses Nortel Networks equipment exclusively in their infrastructure."
